Skype is a free application for chats as well as online phone and video calls. The list of your contacts is visible on the left for easy access. And for every contact, you can see their availability. But this is not all that you get. If needed you can have conference calls or group chats with up to 25 people. The business version of the Skype Communication App even allows up to 250 people. Another nice feature is that you can send files through the chat window by simply dropping them in there.

With all its functionality Skype is still very reliable and intuitive to use. You get good voice quality and a secure connection. There is also a Skype Web Application, but as we have heard, it will not work on Firefox, which is a bit of a negative point for us. Besides the availability for all major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux) you can get Skype Apps for Android and iOS, so you will be able to chat or call on the go as well using your tablet or smartphone.

Making calls to landlines and mobile numbers is possible too, but you will have to pay for these kinds of calls.

Why do you need Skype?

You could, of course, use email (see Yahoo! Mail for a good email option) to communicate with your friends or clients. But sometimes, it is just more convenient and much faster to chat or call quickly. If you see your friend or client available on Skype your problem might be solved in a few minutes. Sending an email and waiting for a reply, on the other hand, can take quite a bit of time. So why wait if you can solve a problem in the shortest possible time? Chatting with a friend and seeing her/him at the same time is also quite nice, isn’t it?

Available for: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, etc.
